2015 Breach Level Index released

24th February 2016 Church News.

The findings of the 2015 Breach Level Index (BLI) have been released by security firm Gemalto. The figures reveal that 707 million data records were compromised worldwide during 2015, and that more than 3.6 billion records have been exposed since 2013 when the index began recording breach information. Malicious outsiders were the leading source of data attacks throughout 2015, accounting for 58 per cent of breaches. The primary source of a breach remained identity theft, accounting for 40 per cent of all compromised records, while accidental loss or exposure of data records accounted for 36 per cent. In terms of sectors, the biggest risers were the government sector, accounting for 43 per cent of compromised data globally, up 476 per cent from 2014 due to several large data breaches in the US and Turkey, and the healthcare sector, accounting for 19 per cent of compromised records, while the retail and financial sectors saw major drops (93 per cent and 99 per cent respectively) in stolen data compared to the same period last year.
