What is DevOps?

18th November 2016 Church News.

As a generalist IT and technology recruiter with 20 years experience of working with both development and infrastructure skills, the introduction of “DevOps” really interested me and I decided to become a niche recruiter in this emerging tech space.  Having built up an extensive client and candidate network over the past couple of years it’s obvious however that there is a wide interpretation of exactly what DevOps is – it seems to cover a multitude of skills and roles which often could be more accurately labelled SysOps or TechOps or even WebOps!

I am currently working, for example, with three UK companies who are all looking for “DevOps Engineers” (that’s what it say on the job spec), however the roles require very different skill sets. One is a Java Backend Developer in a CI/CD environment, one is a Linux Administrator with experience of AWS and the last one is a Network/Infrastructure Engineer with strong Python or Ruby skills.

So what is DevOps? Is it just the new tech bandwagon or does it really provide a radically beneficial method of bringing  the development and operations worlds together to achieve more cost effective and fit for purpose technology solutions?

So if you are looking to recruit or work in the DevOps space it would be great to talk to you about your thoughts on the subject.
